Edge computer links legacy systems to new ones
The Dutch industrial computing specialist OnLogic has announced an edge computer designed to link existing equipment with the cloud, modern sensors, and other legacy devices. The solid-state Helix 511 edge computer offers a choice of connection options to help bridge the gap between modern systems and older technologies.
Many legacy devices still offer business value, but aren’t equipped to connect to modern networks. The new computer can be installed alongside existing equipment, avoiding the need to rip out and replace existing IT/OT infrastructures and helping companies to make the most out of their data.
“We frequently have conversations with customers who are struggling to update their technology infrastructure simply because they can’t connect existing systems to newer, more powerful and more capable devices,” explains OnLogic product manager, Hunter Golden. “The embedded computing space has traditionally lagged behind when it comes to adopting new technologies. We want to shift that paradigm while still allowing innovators to access and exchange data with their existing equipment. In many cases, you don't need to rip and replace everything – you just need a Helix 511.”
A pair of Thunderbolt 4 ports provide high-bandwidth connections to devices or displays, while up to four serial ports can communicate simultaneously with legacy devices. The PC can be configured with onboard digital input/output (DIO) to provide programmable signalling and control. It can also be used with a built-in cellular modem, certified to operate on carrier networks.
The fanless PC can be specified with a choice of Intel 12th generation processors, from Celeron to Core i7. Up to 64GB of DDR5 memory provides wide bandwidth and low latency, while consuming less power than DDR4. Onboard graphics options include Intel UHD or Iris Xe. Users can specify operating systems such as Windows, Ubuntu Linux or Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
The Helix 511 has been certified to industry standards including FCC, CE, UKCA, CB, cULus, VCCI and RCM. It has also undergone electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing. It can operate in temperatures from 0 to 50°C, can accept power inputs ranging from 12-24V. It is wall, Vesa or DIN-rail mountable.
