IP20 and IP55 VSDs can control motors rated up to 250kW

28 October, 2021

The Welsh drives-maker Invertek Drives has launched a series of high-powered Size 8 variable-speed drives in two versions: with IP55/Nema 12 enclosures for direct mounting; and IP20 enclosures for control cabinet mounting. The drives, members of the company’s Optidrive P2 and Optidrive Eco families, can control motors rated up to 480A with power ratings up to 250kW. They replace the existing Size 8 models which were available only with IP20 protection for control cabinet mounting.

The new range also adds DNV marine certification, as well as built-in EMC filters to meet Category C3, with high-performance Category C2 filters available as a factory-fit option. They come with high-definition TFT displays as standard.

The IP20 and IP55 versions can both operate in ambient temperatures up to 50˚C, and conform to UL, cUL, EAC and RCM requirements.

“The P2 and Eco drives are already used in a wide range of global industries,” says Invertek’s technical manager, Kes Beech. “We’ve launched the new Size 8 to meet the growing demand for more powerful and precise electric motor control. The addition of the IP55 enclosure to the range provides a direct mounted option, opening up a host of new opportunities.

“Reliability, ease of use, and energy efficiency are all synonymous with our Optidrive range,” he adds. “This is replicated in the new Size 8.”

The Optidrive P2 is aimed at high-performance applications such as mixers, extruders, conveyors, cranes and hoists. It can provide up to 200% torque from zero speed, ensuring reliable starting and accurate speed control under all load conditions.

The Optidrive Eco is used widely around the world to control fans, pumps and compressors, in HVAC and water industry applications.

The drives include built-in chokes, keypads and high-definition, multi-language TFT displays as standard. They can be used with Invertek’s OptiTools Studio PC software for set-up, commissioning and control, as well as its OptiTools Mobile apps for smartphones and tablets.

Invertek Drives, established in 1998 in Welshpool, Powys, designs and manufactures electronic variable-speed drives. In November 2019, it was acquired by Sumitomo Heavy Industries. Also in 2019, Invertek opened a new 5,500m2 global manufacturing and distribution facility at its headquarters, which can produce up to 400,000 VSDs a year. Invertek’s products are sold in more than 80 countries.
