All Talking Industry Events in 2021

14 December, 2020

Talking Industry is DFA Media’s innovative new series of online panel discussions. A panel of four or five industry experts from the worlds of engineering, automation and manufacturing join our veteran consultant editor and commentator Andy Pye on Zoom to discuss subjects of vital importance to the sector. Registrants can now apply for CPD acredited hours when attending Talking Industry events.

Industrial Networks, IIOT and Communications - 10am UK, Tue Jan 12 2021

Connectivity is a one-word summary for Industry 4.0 revolution. From fieldbus to industrial Ethernet, from proprietary technologies to open standards, the evolution of network technologies has improved productivity and increased the interoperability of communication.

Industrial networking and IIoT are complementary. The importance of Internet of Things (IoT) and Industrial IoT (IIoT) have increased dramatically with massive numbers of interconnected devices, but at the cost of new cybersecurity challenges.

Plant Safety and Security - 10am UK, Tue Mar 9 2021

Do safety and security in industrial plants need rethinking? The future of process is digital, which creates many opportunities for plant operators to enhance efficiency, increase flexibility and make their plants future-proof. However, there is a downside: threats to plant security arising from rapidly growing and increasingly sophisticated cyber criminality.

Safe automation must now encompass more than just emergency shutdown, but also provide effective protection against cyberattacks.

Robotics & Advanced Automation - 10am UK, Tue May 11 2021

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is considered to be a critical priority of Digital Transformation (DX). But organisations must also focus on a long-term intelligent automation strategy.

Across a multitude of industries, challenged by the diversification of end-user needs and labour shortages, automation can handle advanced work demands and changes.

But robots no longer need to work alone; collaborative robots work hand-in-hand with humans, balancing safety with the need for flexibility and productivity.

Maintenance 4.0 - 10am UK, Tue Jul 13 2021

Maintenance 4.0 is a machine-assisted digital form of all the things we have being doing for the past 40 years to ensure our assets deliver value for our organisations. Maintenance 4.0 includes a holistic view of sources of data, ways to connect it, ways to collect it, and ways to analyse it.

Discussions will include technologies, strategies and solutions to implement and transition to a digital, "Maintenance 4.0" era.

Digital Transformation - 10am UK, Tue Sep 14 2021

Digital Transformation in the UK – How to turbo-charge adoption rates, leading to business and operational advantages

While an increasing number of enterprise companies and some SMEs are adopting digitally transformative technology, the UK continues to fall behind other nations, including the US and Germany. What can be done to further evangelise the benefits of digitally transformative concepts to improve efficiency and competitive perspective? How can clearer definitions concepts - like IIoT, Industry 4.0 Smart Factory, Digital Twins, Machine Learning, Analytics and AI – be promoted more clearly?

Rotary friction welding: an efficient and cost-effective means to joining a wide variety of materials – 10am UK, Tue Oct 5 2021

As a fabrication process, welding has been utilized within manufacturing for decades. Traditional welding methods, however, aren’t always suitable for components intended for use within high-impact applications, such as drilling, automotive or power generation. Friction welding delivers an enhanced level of weld integrity, that in turn delivers a superior end product/component. Rotary and linear friction techniques can satisfy industrial joining needs across multiple sectors, though its utilization is still relatively low across the wider manufacturing spectrum, despite affording a number of significant advantages, such as: superior joint strength, very low risk for safety critical joints, fast weld times, economical, flexibility to weld wide range of similar & dissimilar materials.

3D Printing/Additive Manufacturing - 10am UK, Tue Nov 9 2021

Additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, uses CAD data or 3D object scanners to deposit material, layer upon layer, in precise geometric shapes. This Talking Industry debate examines the the power of additive manufacturing for design, test and production, while exploring the limitations and how these are being addressed.
