Encoders are first to support CIP Safety over EtherNet/IP

12 March, 2020

Rockwell Automation has developed what it claims are the first encoders to support the CIP Safety over EtherNet/IP protocol for safety applications up to SIL 3 / PLe. The Allen-Bradley 843ES absolute encoders are aimed at safety applications that need speed, direction or position-monitoring functions.

The encoders are designed to be used as part of an integrated safety system that includes an Allen-Bradley GuardLogix 5580 controller or a Compact GuardLogix 5380 controller.

As well as the safety functions, the encoders are also claimed to deliver:
Higher productivity Users can continue production while safely monitoring for speed, direction or position.
Better visibility By integrating safety with standard controls, operators can access all machine events, including safety events, thus reducing response times.
Faster designs Integrating safety functions over EtherNet/IP can cut hardware and installation costs and save time.
More efficient system designs Auxiliary feedback via an EtherNet/IP network on CIP Safety can deliver safety integrity and performance using fewer components.

Options include: three configurable resolutions; solid or hollow shafts; and various flanges.
