Technology integrates electrical and process data in one view

23 May, 2018

Rockwell Automation has announced a technology that gives plant operators a single, integrated view of process and electrical system data. Called the IntelliCenter Integration Unit, it combines intelligent electrical distribution devices with a process automation environment. Integrating these elements into a single control and software platform is said to avoid the need for a separate electrical Scada system and to give process and electrical operators a single, unified view of their data.

Traditionally, these operators have accessed their data through two separate systems, making it difficult to achieve timely and proactive decision-making. Rockwell says that the new system will help to solve this challenge.

“Manufacturers and producers across industries are trying to reduce their risks and energy use and reach higher productivity goals,” explains Rockwell’s IntelliCenter product specialist, Joe Matheys. “That can be difficult with disparate process and electrical systems. The IntelliCenter Integration Unit allows operators, engineers and maintenance personnel to see both systems on one HMI screen. This streamlined view can help better monitor and optimise operations.”

The system takes electrical information sent via a standard IEC 61850 network interface into a Logix-based control environment. This removes the cost and complexity of designing an interface to connect electronic devices to the process control system. By using the control capabilities of a Logix-based processor, intelligent switchgear and other intelligent electrical equipment can become part of a complete automation system.

In addition, the technology is claimed to simplify the configuration of the entire system. A library of add-on instructions gives users a common environment for archiving, visualisation and reporting. The library provides pre-built, validated add-on instructions for third-party devices used in electrical control systems. It provides a similar look-and-feel to Rockwell’s process control devices, helping to improve operational awareness and productivity.

The IntelliCenter system is a technology enabler for Rockwell’s Intelligent Packaged Power offering which helps to reduce risk by delivering motor-control devices and electrical distribution systems in a single, consolidated package.
