Slim hybrid motor controls save up to 75% space

Small, enclosure-mounted drives rated up to 9A are usually protected by conventional motor circuit-breakers. However, when space is limited in the enclosure, it can be difficult to accommodate enough protective devices. Rittal has therefore developed a range of motor controllers which perform the functions of direct starter and reversing starter in a single device.

The new controllers form part of Rittal’s RiLine Compact power distribution system, which was launched at the 2016 SPS IPC Drives show. Until now, the 125A-maximum busbar system has consisted of shock-hazard-protected boards, which form the basic element of the system, as well as assembly components such as connection adapters for busbar infeeds, and component adapters for easy setting-up of switchgear and protection devices from different manufacturers.

Like the existing components, new motor controllers fit directly onto the boards, connecting mechanically and electronically in a one-step action. This simple installation, combined with internal circuit and wiring, reduces the time and effort spent on wiring.

The 22.5mm-wide motor controllers are available in three current ranges – 0.6A, 2.4A and 9A – and, according to Rittal, they will cut space requirements by about 50% compared to standard 45mm-wide switching devices, and by up to 75% compared to 90mm-wide reversing combinations.

The three-phase motor controllers are hybrid switching devices with built-in current-monitoring functions. The hybrid technology is said to result in low-loss operation and extended lifespans. The electronics are first switched on via the input signal, and then mechanical contacts take over for normal operation.

Built-in diagnostic functions detect internal and external errors. The operating status and error messages are evaluated via four LEDs.
