US motor-maker buys gearmotor specialist to offer motion packages

13 June, 2016

The US motor manufacturer, HTI Technology, has acquired the fractional horsepower gearmotor producer, Klauber Machine & Gear (KMG), for an undisclosed sum. HTI plans to combine its own expertise in AC and DC motor and drives systems with Klauber’s technology and expertise in AC and DC gearmotors, to offer application-engineered motion packages.

Klauber will continue to operate from its site in Pacific, Missouri, near St. Louis. Its president, Frank Parker, will report to HTI CEO, John Paul, and will also become a board member and shareholder in HTI.

“With this Klauber acquisition, we are able to bring world-class gearing design and production capabilities into the HTI solutions family,” says Paul. “By combining Klauber’s very strong fractional horsepower gearmotor products with American Control Electronics’ drives and controls technology (acquired in September 2015) and HTI’s AC, DC and brushless DC motors and mechanisms offerings, we will be able to work with our global customers to understand their powered motion needs and to offer complete application engineered solutions to meet those needs.

“We can now provide our customers’ required power with HTI motors, reduce the speed and increase the torque of these motors with Klauber gearing, and then dynamically vary the users’ equipment speed with ACE drives’” he adds. “This enables HTI to do the complete powered motion systems integration work for our customers’ engineers, freeing them to focus on their overall equipment design.”

KMG president Frank Parker says that both companies have “strong product offerings, high-quality manufacturing capabilities, deep knowledge of our customers’ applications, and dedicated and knowledgeable employees. As a combined business, we will be perfectly positioned to combine our strengths into innovative systems that meet our customers’ needs, with the global scale to serve even larger markets. This is a great move for our customers and our business.”

Klauber was founded in the 1950s as a company that sold industrial machinery, including gear fabrication equipment. It began using these machines to produce gears and related components for OEM customers. Parker bought the company in 1985 and decided to focus on manufacturing small AC and DC gearmotors. KMG moved to its current 60,000ft2 site in 1999.

Tennessee-based HTI Technologies and Industries was established in 1989. It designs and manufactures electric motors and engineering assemblies and has two factories in China.
