Alarm system will cut downtime and boost safety

09 July, 2015

Unitronics has added an alarm management system to its UniStream all-in-one controller, which combines the functions of a PLC and an HMI. Designed to comply with the ISA 18.2 guidelines for implementing, operating and managing alarm systems, the alarm system is supported by a new version of Unitronics’ application development software, UniLogic.

The system will allow operators to detect alarms, analyse them, and to take the appropriate corrective actions. For example, an “alarm banner” can alert users when alarms occur, while an alarm summary table allows them to review active alarms and to perform any necessary actions.

An alarm status viewer allows operators to view alarms, check their status, disable and shelve them, and to enter comments via the UniStream’s virtual keyboard. State-based alarm suppression options allow programmers to optimise alarm reports, prevent nuisance alarms, and avoid alarm flooding conditions.

UniStream product manager Ofer Farkash says that the alarm management system will allow machine-builders and automation control engineers to cut unplanned downtime, increase safety, improve operators’ effectiveness, and improve machine/process performance and productivity.

The alarm system is configured using the latest version of Unitronics’ freely downloadable UniLogic environment. An optional advanced configuration section allows programmers to optimise alarm announcements.

UniStream can perform device-dedicated tasks, such as: acting as a data-logger; tracking run-time data and displaying it via trend graphs; as well as executing advanced PLC functions such as controlling multiple auto-tuned PID loops.

•  On 15 July, Unitronics’ global tech support manager Ofir Levi is presenting a Webinar to explain how to accomplish these tasks and more. The “10 killer features” Webinar will provide opportunities for participants to make comments and ask questions. You can register online for the event.
