World-record electric sportscar makes tracks for the NEC

13 March, 2014

A British-built electric sportscar that last year broke the world land speed record for sub-999kg electric vehicles, will be a crowd-puller at the Drives & Controls Show in April. The Drayson Racing Technologies (DRT) EV will be on show on the Carter Bearings stand and the technologies that helped to break the record will be described in a talk at the exhibition’s seminar theatre on Tuesday, 8 April.

In October last year, the DRT B12/69 EV recorded an average speed of 205.139 mph over a measured mile and 333.271 km/h over the measured kilometre. This speed also represents a new British land speed record over a measured mile for cars of any propulsion type that are driven via their wheels.

With Lord Drayson at the wheel, the car also set a new world electric record from a standing start, covering a quarter-mile in 9.742s at an average speed of 92.383 mph.

The car is powered by four axial-flux motors, with a combined output of 640kW, linked to an independent drive axle system, which can adjust the torque delivery to each wheel separately. It can hit 100km/h in three seconds. Carter supplied bearings for the sportscar.

With less than a month to go to the Drives Show, new exhibitors still signing up for the event. For example, Parker Hannifin will be joining the line-up on the Gambica pavilion where it will be promoting its latest ranges of drives and systems, ranging from microdrives to turnkey packages.

A trio of Italian mechanical power transmission companies will form a mini “Italian village” on the pavilion being organised by the European Power Transmission Distributors’ Association (EPTDA). They are: the torque limiter and couplings manufacturer, CominTec; the belt drives and gearbox supplier, Poggi Transmissions; and the linear actuators and screwjacks specialist, MecVel.

Another recent addition to the EPTDA line-up is Fenner Drives, whose product portfolio includes keyless bushings, V-belts, O-rings, and belt and chain tensioners.

The Drayson record-breaking electric sportscar will be the centrepiece of the Carter Bearings stand at the Drives & Controls Show

A mechanical specialist that will be making its debut at this year’s Drives & Controls Show is South East Power Transmissions, which manufactures tooth pulleys and supplies tooth belts. Other first-timers include: Texam, based in Country Antrim, which sells customisable inverters and decentralised motor control products from the German manufacturer, MSF-Technik; and Power Products International, the Kent-based manufacturer of power semiconductor assemblies.

Returning to the show after an absence of several years is Ebm-Papst, which supplies AC and DC motors, as well as complete drive systems including gearboxes, sensors and controls.

Also returning are: the positioning equipment manufacturer and distributor LG Motion, whose motion control portfolio includes stepper motors and distributed motion systems; and Automation Experts, which specialises in recruitment services for the manufacturing, processing and utility sectors.
