ABB has developed a Web and iPad tool that helps users to choose motors that comply with different MEPS (Minimum Energy Performance Standard) schemes in force around the world. They simply select the required characteristics from dropdown lists in the Optimizer tool, which displays a shortlist of suitable motors.

The motors can then be compared in terms of running costs, payback periods, lifecycle savings and greenhouse gas emission reductions. The tool will also suggest any suitable higher efficiency motors and highlight the potential extra savings. Test reports, drawings, datasheets and other documents are available.

“Selecting the optimum motor to meet a specific MEPS can be a complicated task, says Jani Korkeakoski of ABB’s LV motor product management. “With the Optimizer, we’ve developed a tool that not only makes the job easy but also provides running cost information and easy access to all the necessary documentation.”

The application is available via a Web browser or as an iPad app. Initially it covers ABB’s standard IEC LV motors and motors for explosive atmospheres. It will be expanded later to include other motors and to calculate costs of ownership. iPhone and Android apps are planned.
