Distributed starters slot into Profi networks

Siemens has developed a range of IP65-protected motor starter modules that can be mounted on machines without cabinets. The modules form part of its Simatic ET 200pro distributed I/O system, allowing them to be linked into Profibus or Profinet networks.

The starters, suitable for loads up to 5.5kW, are available in line or reversing versions. They incorporate electronic overload protection and can display the switching and starter status on LEDs and via the bus. Brake control is an option.

In addition to the standard starters, there are "high feature" versions with four parameterisable digital inputs.

The range also includes "repair switch modules" which separate downstream starters from the mains, or can act as extra short-circuit protection for downstream loads. When these modules are used with 400V shut-off modules, they can provide local safe shutdowns to Category 4.

The starters are integrated using Siemens Step7 software which can be used to configure them as Profibus or Profinet nodes.
