AEG Motors sets up shop in the UK

AEG Electric Motors has set up a subsidiary to handle its activities in the UK and Ireland. Nigel Evenett has been appointed managing director of the new company, AEG-Lafert Electric Motors, which is based in Crewe. The company has started with a staff of four but is already recruiting more.

The AEG motors business is now part of the €93m Lafert group, with three factories in Italy and Spain. More than 60% of production is devoted to low voltage motors designed to specific customer requirements. AEG-Lafert produces motors in frame sizes 56-315 spanning power ratings from 0.09-200kW.

AEG-Lafert has formed a strategic partnership with Micro Clutch Developments (MCD) of Weston-super-Mare which will stock motors in ratings up to 132kW. MCD will also offer power transmission equipment for OEMs and will service end-users through a network of repair companies.

Evenett will be targeting OEM customers in particular. He says that their demands "cannot be satisfied by technical innovation alone, but by ensuring a reliable supply partnership which demands a greater understanding of the customers` business".

He says that AEG-Lafert already does business worth around £1m in the UK. But he points out that this represents just 1% of the market. "There`s still a hell of a lot to go for," he adds.
