Compressor parts will join the ECA list

Various types of compressor equipment, including electronic level-sensing drain traps and condition-monitoring control systems, are among five energy-saving technologies that the Government wants to add to the Enhanced Capital Allowances (ECA) tax-break scheme.

The additions were announced last month in Chancellor Gordon Brown`s Budget and are now subject to the passage of the 2002 Finance Bill, and to approval from the European Commission. But Future Energy Solutions, the body which administers the Government`s energy efficiency best practice programme, expects new lists of qualifying technologies to be published this summer.

Electronic level-sensing drain traps (or zero-loss drains, as they are also known) monitor the level of condensate in a compressed air system and open when it reaches a pre-determined level, thus minimising the loss of compressed air.

The condition-monitoring control systems being added to the ECA list include pressure dewpoint-dependent switches, which monitor a dryer`s performance and maintain its operating characteristics.

In the Budget, the Chancellor froze the Climate Change Levy rates. He also officially launched the Emissions Trading Scheme, which started operating last month..
