`World’s first` IE4 induction motors make a Hannover debut

25 April, 2012

ABB claims to have launched the “world`s first range of IE4 induction motors” at the 2012 Hannover Fair. It says that the super-premium efficiency motors, which do not rely on permanent magnets, will deliver the highest efficiency and reliability, allowing motor users to optimise their cost of ownership.

The IE4 motors (shown above) are based on ABB’s proven induction motor platform and are available now on short delivery times. They cover ratings from 75–375kW in frame sizes 280–355, and are available for 400V, 50Hz and 440/460V, 60Hz supplies, in two-, four- and six-pole versions.

“These motors provide the ultimate in energy efficiency – the highest efficiency currently available in the market,” says Jani Korkeakoski of ABB’s IEC low-voltage motor product management team. “The design is based on our proven process-performance induction motor platform and it meets IE4 requirements without using permanent magnet technology.”

The IE4 motors are said to be ideal for continuous-duty applications. Compared to lower efficiency machines, the IE4 motors will consume less energy and produce less carbon dioxide emissions over their lifetime. Their high efficiencies will also result in lower winding and bearing temperatures, improving the motors’ reliability.
