Siemens Automation & Drives has acquired BSL`s spindle service and repair workshop business, based in Handforth Dean, Cheshire. The new deal, which follows Siemens` acquisition of Weiss Spindles last year, consolidates the company`s presence in the machine tool market where it claims to be the leading supplier.

Nigel Atherton, formerly a development engineer with Newall Measurement Systems, has et up his own business, Protura, based in Loughborough`s Technology Centre. He plans to launch a range of high-specification encoder interfaces, to link encoders to PCs or PLCs. Protura`s phone number is 01509 269018.

Paul Heiden, Rolls-Royce`s finance director, is joining FKI as chief executive, replacing Bob Beeston who is retiring next January. Beeston, who has run FKI for a decade, postponed his retirement by almost a year to reassure investors. FKI has cut nearly 1,500 jobs in the past year and in the year to March its pre-tax profits fell 33% to £106.7m, on a turnover that dropped 8% to £1.6bn.

Parker`s Hannifin`s European Filter Division has set up a condition monitoring centre in Thetford, Norfolk, as part of an initiative to penetrate the European hydraulic fluid analysis and preventive maintenance market. Details on www.ucc.co.uk

Following SKF`s recent acquisition of the Swiss electrical actuation manufacturer, the Magnetic Group, SKF Engineering Products (SKF EPL) is working closely with Electro Mechanical Systems (EMS) to serve the UK market. Each partner will continue to service its existing accounts, with EMS remaining as the centre of excellence for Magnetic products, while SKF EPL will be the centre of expertise for SKF actuators and other SKF products.

Electrical connector and decontactor supplier Maréchal has closed its Chester office and transferred its administrative sales and ordering activities to its head office in Paris. It has also changed its name to Maréchal Electric. The UK field sales team will remain the first point of contact for product queries or technical questions, but orders can now be faxed directly to 0870 600 3091.
