Module marries motion, PLC and safety functions

12 November, 2011

Pilz has announced a module that combines motion control, PLC and safety functions in one compact device. The PMCprimo DriveP is designed for applications with several axes and demanding requirements in terms of performance and synchronised movements.

The expandable system (above) integrates the functions of a motion control card with a servo amplifier. Two CANopen networks operate in parallel to deliver short cycle times for systems of up to 16 axes.

The module is powered by an Intel Atom processor, assisted by an FPGA chip, which relieves the processor of field bus communications. In addition to six digital inputs and outputs for motion control, the system also handles the servo amplifier inputs and outputs.

For safety-related applications, the PMCprimo DriveP can be expanded using the PMCprotego S safety card, thus producing an all-in-one motion controller for drive, control and safety.

All of the configuration data is stored on an SD memory card, avoiding the need for PCs, software or cables when exchanging modules or expanding an installation.
