Kollmorgen has launched a range of coating-protected washdown servomotors which, it claims, are cheaper, 30–50% smaller and 10–30% lighter than conventional food-grade motors that use a high proportion of stainless steel. They are also said to last three times longer and to cost 20% less to commission and maintain. Their material costs are also about 30% lower.

According to Kollmorgen, the performance of conventional stainless-steel motors is impaired by their poor heat dissipation and heavy weights. By contrast, the AKM Washdown motors have few stainless-steel components, relatively low weights and good heat dissipation.

The two-part protective coating is said to comply with IP67, allowing wet cleaning with chemicals with pH values in the range 2–12. Cleaning and disinfection are simplified by the motors’ smooth, round surfaces. The coating is available in white or stainless steel finishes.

The washdown motors are based on Kollmorgen’s standard high-power-density AKM motors in sizes 2–6, which have static torque ratings from 1–25Nm and operate from supply voltages of 75–480V. There is a choice of lengths, winding versions, and connection types, and the motors can be adapted to customer requirements. They do not need to be foot-mounted and can be attached to machines.
