IP55/66 drives enclosure sizes shrink `by a third`
Published:  22 February, 2010

Danfoss says it has managed to shrink the size of IP55 and IP66 rated versions of its frequency converters up to 4kW by about a third. The company says that it achieved this through a combination of a newly developed cooling technology and  modern, high-efficiency components.

Despite the A4 enclosures for the VLT AutomationDrive, HVAC Drive and Aqua Drive families being much smaller than the previous A5 types, the power components can still cope with the demanding requirements, even in applications with high overload torques, long motor cables, or ambient temperatures up to 50°C.

Key components such as an RFI filters (compliant with EN 55011 Class A1/B), mains interference suppression chokes, and brake modules, can still be integrated into the drives, avoiding extra installation costs for external components.

A flexible power module design allows the drives to be used for machinery or conveyors requiring high over-torque, or for applications such as centrifugal pumps and fans with normal over-torque requirements.

During development, considerable attention was given to making the drives accessible and to cutting installation times. For example, the mechanical fastening points can be accessed from the front, while the fasteners can be operated using automatic tools. The terminal clamps are arranged to allow cabling to be installed using a simple work sequence. The cable entry in the base is available with metric or non-metric threads. In addition, all terminal clamps are fitted with a protective cover.

Two (A and B) extension slots are provided. They can be used for communication interfaces – such as Profibus, Profinet, Ethernet I/P or CANopen – as well for additional inputs and outputs.

The new enclosures are available in IP55 (Nema 12) and IP66 (Nema 4X) versions, and cover input voltages from 380– 480/500V (three-phase) up to 4kW, and 200–240V to 2.2kW.
