Soft-starts connect in seconds without tools

13 December, 2009

Eaton Moeller used the recent SPS/IPC/Drives show in Germany to preview a new range of 45mm-wide soft-starts which match the form factor of the circuit-breakers and contactors in its xStart system. The DS7 soft-starts (which will eventually replace the DS4 series) can be linked to other xStart devices and motors in “a few seconds” using a tool-less plug connection system. Conventional terminal strips are no longer needed in control cabinets for connecting motors.

The two-phase actuated starters (shown above) use a patented startup procedure that suppresses DC components, leading to smooth, fast, high-torque startups. Fans can be fitted internally to allow more starts per hour.

Three potentiometers are used to set starting and stopping ramps and the starting voltage. There are nine versions for motor ratings from 1.1–15kW, 400V or 3–32A, 480V. There will also be versions for 24V AC/DC or 110/230V control voltage inputs. A SmartWire-Darwin interface will support remote diagnostics.
