Barcodes locate positions with millimetre accuracies

27 November, 2008

SPS logoLeuze has produced a low-cost barcode-based position locating system that can determine the position of transport equipment such as overhead carriers, hoists and rail-mounted vehicles to within millimetres over distances of up to 10km.

The Barcode Positioning System (below) uses a laser scanner to read long strips of barcodes attached to the equipment. It determines a precise location from a combination of the code’s position and the information it contains. The data is transferred to higher-level controls via an RS-232 interface.

The non-contact system does not suffer from wear or slippage and can operate with a long scanning distance that compensates for varying mechanical tolerances.
