Brush-wear monitor eliminates guesswork

19 September, 2008

The US motor manufacturer Bodine has developed a brush-wear monitoring system that mounts inside the housing of a permanent magnet DC (PMDC) motor and indicates when the brushes are nearing the end of their useful life. The system will allow OEMs to offer uninterrupted operation of PMDC gearmotors or motors, and to eliminate the guesswork in brush maintenance and inspection.

Bodine, which is seeking patent protection for the technology, originally developed it for a customer who wanted to monitor brush-wear and motor life in a battery- and solar-powered application.

The motor-maker is now offering the technology as an option on its 42-frame PMDC gearmotors and motors.
