Three-in-one box is `first` to combine IPC, router and switch
Published:  02 August, 2008

The Taiwanese industrial communications specialist, Korenix, has developed a compact box that combines the functions of an industrial PC, a managed Ethernet switch and a router. The company claims that its JetBox 9300 is the first multi-function device of its type. The box recently won the "best choice" award at Computex Taipei, the world’s third-largest IT trade show.

The IP31-protected aluminium alloy box (above )weighs just 700g and measures 149 x 115 x 66mm. It contains: a RISC-based embedded computer running the Linux operating system; a router with five Ethernet ports that can be used to connect at least two networks; and a managed Ethernet switch that supports SNMP and other protocols.

The box is "currently the only embedded computer device to provide this type of three-way functionality in a single box," asserts Andy Cross, business development manager of Korenix`s recently formed UK operation.

The box has dual power inputs (12–48V DC) and is equipped with two USB 2.0 ports, two RS-232 ports, two RS-232/422/485 ports, eight digital inputs, eight digital outputs and an SD memory card slot. It supports Modbus and Modbus/TCP.

In a typical set-up, the box will collect data from a serial interface and pass it to the control centre via an Ethernet port. If the Ethernet link is broken, it will still collect data from the serial interface and store it on a memory card. When the Ethernet link is restored, the data will be forwarded to the control centre.
