Motor selection site checks application suitability
A Dutch-based motor selection Web site has enhanced its facilities to allow users to determine to whether a particular motor is suitable for their application. The free-to-use specAmotor site was launched about a year ago and now includes details of more than 12,000 motors from 23 manufacturers, including Aerotech, Baldor, Danaher, Lenze, Maxon, Moog, Parker Hannifin and SEM.
The site, run by an Internet start-up business called Confirmat, allows users to "virtually test" a motor to see whether it is suitable for their application. If not, the site explains why it is not suitable. It also calculates motor operating temperatures to avoid the risk of over-heating.
Another recent addition to the site allows requests for quotations to be sent automatically to every manufacturer that has a suitable motor, according to specAmotor’s calculations.
As in incentive to attract users, the site is offering a free book called Electrical drives for precision engineering designs, written by Prof John Compter who was chief drives technologist at Philips Applied Industries, as well as a part-time professor at the Technical University of Eindhoven. There is also free downloadable white paper on how to avoid over-heating and over-dimensioning when choosing motors.
