WEG invests $50m in Indian motor plant
The Brazilian motor-maker WEG is building a $50m plant in India to produce a new line of electric motors. The plant will be built in Hosur, near Bangalore, and is expected to start production at the end of next year, reaching its full capacity by the end of 2013.
WEG president Harry Schmelzer (above) says that the announcement marks a big step forward in WEG`s international strategy. "The Hosur plant will build on the manufacturing structures we already have in place in Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Portugal and China," he says, "cementing our position as one of the biggest players in the electrical products world market."
The new plant, being built on a 170,000m2 site, will also improve the company’s international distribution capacity. WEG has had an subsidiary in India since 2004..
As well as building the Indian plant, WEG is constructing a new factory and extending an existing motor and generator manufacturing line, both in Brazil.
