Baumer Electric has developed a modular magnetic sensing system which, it claims, offers a more affordable alternative to optical sensors for measuring rotational speed and angles. The EcoSpin system consists of a variety of sensor types, magnet carriers and accessories which can be combined to provide a wide range of pulses per revolution.

For example, there is a choice of four different numbers of poles per ring, and six interpolation factors, allowing angular measurements to be made with a resolution of 0.5 degrees. The 10mm-thick flat sensors can fit into small spaces and, according to Baumer, can be mounted in less than a minute using a spacer attached to the sensor.

The contact-free sensors are suitable for applications subject to vibrations or contamination.
