All-in-one encoder chip shrinks measurements

08 December, 2007

An all-in-one linear motion encoder chip which incorporates Hall Effect sensors and a signal processor, has been developed by austriamicrosystems. The chip is aimed at linear and off-axis rotation measurements in applications such as drives, XY stages and motors.

The AS5305 chip operates by sensing a multi-pole magnetic strip moving past it. Using a single-track strip, it can perform incremental measurements with a resolution as small as 14µm per step. When used with a double-track strip, it can measure absolute displacements with the chip reading index information from the second strip to provide a reference position.

The chip can also be used with a multi-pole magnetic ring to perform off-axis rotational measurements. With a 32 pole-pair ring, for example, it can deliver a resolution of up to 5,120 positions per revolution, and operate at speeds of up to 9,375 rpm.
