Tilt sensor is `100 times smaller than rivals`
The US semiconductor developer, Analog Devices, has produced a programmable dual-axis tilt sensor which, it claims, is one hundredth the size of rival devices. Based on MEMS (micro-electromechanical systems) technology, the inclinometer is also said to be the most precise available, with an error of less than 0.1 degrees across a ±30-degree range, when mounted horizontally.
The device, aimed at applications such as machine tools and motion safety monitors, senses the environment and compensates the sensor’s output dynamically to account for changes in voltage, temperature, angle and other variables. This avoids the need for external calibration and signal processing that can add to the complexity, costs and design lead-times of rival technologies.
