Schaffner to pull out of test systems
Published:  01 July, 2005

The Swiss-based Schaffner Group has announced plans to sell its Test Systems Division, allowing it to focus on its market-leading components business, which represents 70% of its sales.

Schaffner says that the test business, which supplies EMC instrumentation, RF test systems and other test equipment, is not an international leader and does not have the potential to achieve a market-leading position with its current level of internal resources.

The Test Systems Division accounts for about 10% of Schaffner`s 2,000-strong global workforce. In the first nine months of the 2004/2005 fiscal year, sales in the division fell by 13.4% to CHF32.3m (£14.3m), while orders dropped by 15.7% to CHF33.6m (£14.9m).

Schaffner argues that only those companies with a dominant position in the markets in which they compete, can achieve long-term success.

"We need to continue to invest in new products and processes to maintain our market-leading position [in the components business] for the long term," says Schaffner`s UK managing director, Paul Dixon. He adds that until a buyer is found for the Test Systems Division, it will be "business as usual".

Proceeds from the sale will be invested in further product development.
