Siemens buys Moeller`s busbar trunking business

01 March, 2004

Siemens has bought Moeller`s busbar trunking systems division from the US private equity group Advent International, which bought the previously family-owned group late last year. Details of the deal, which includes the acquisition of the Barduct brand, have not been disclosed.

The division employs 600 people at four manufacturing sites, in Germany, Spain, China and Aylesbury in the UK. Its sales last year were worth about €95m. Moeller will now concentrate on components for switching, contacting and control, and the sale will help it to invest in these core business areas, as well as improving its competitive position.

"The sale has taken us a major step further forward in implementing our concentration strategy," says Moeller`s managing director, Theo Kubat. "On the one hand, we are optimising the financial basis of the Moeller Group; on the other, we are increasing our competitivity by investing further in the development of new products and systems for our core range".

About Moeller 90 employees are involved in the busbar trunking business in the UK. They will transfer to Siemens Automation and Drives. The operation, which focuses on high-current systems for use in commercial buildings, is housed in a separate building from the rest of Moeller`s UK operation, making the transfer easier.

The sale will leave Moeller with around 80 employees in Aylesbury who will continue to sell its core products and to assemble constrol and distribution panels. The company also employs some 180 people in Worksop where it manufactures cam switches and similar items.

The busbar trunking business will reinforce Siemens` power distribution portfolio. The global market for busbar trunking is worth about €700m and is growing by 3-4% a year.
