Houston-based Powell Industries has bought Bradford-based Switchgear & Instrumentation (S&I) for $18.4m from the UK contractor, NG Bailey. S&I, which employs about 300 people, supplies motor control systems, MV and LV switchgear, and power distribution systems, mainly to the oil, gas and petrochemical sectors.

• Matsushita Electric Works has been renamed Panasonic Electric Works UK (PEWUK) and has adopted Panasonic as its new brand name (to replace NaiS).

The Deritend Group has created a new business focussing on the maintenance of machine tools. Deritend Machine Tool Services will be based, initially, at Deritend`s Wolverhampton branch.

The Californian interface specialist Moore Industries has reached an agreement with Manchester-based Hawke International to acquire its fieldbus products, which include Foundation Fieldbus and Profibus PA device couplers and fieldbus power supplies. The products will now be marketed under the MooreHawke name.

• Emerson is buying the measurement technologies business, Solartron Mobrey, from the British Roxboro Group for £26m. Solartron Mobrey, whose portfolio includes level, density, viscosity and flow products, will be renamed Mobrey Measurement and will become part of Emerson Process Management.
