Motor is `first with RFID`

The German motor manufacturer VEM, claims to have produced the first motor to incorporate RFID (radio frequency identification) technology. The system, developed in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute, is used to store information about the motor and its operation.

The RFID memory will stay with the motor throughout its life, initially holding data about it manufacture and specifications, and adding a history of its operation and maintenance. This information will be available immediately at any time, speeding up troubleshooting, servicing and other activities.

Other motor manufacturers, including Lenze and SEW Eurodrive, are starting to add "electronic nameplates" to their products. These can be used, for example, to download details of the motor to a controller to speed up installation and commissioning.
