Apple’s Vision Pro guides you to install motor starters

22 April, 2024

People working on equipment such as motor starters and electrical panels will soon be able to receive guidance and tuition via Apple’s recently launched Vision Pro “spatial computer” headset, which provides ultra-high-resolution 3D images that merge the real and digital worlds and can be controlled by natural inputs such as a user’s eyes, hand gestures or voice.

Visitors to this year’s Hannover Messe have been shown demonstrations of the technology delivering step-by-step instructions for installing Siemens motor starters and power distribution panels.

Siemens has teamed up with a US software developer, Bilt, which specialises in 3D apps for the Vision Pro and handheld devices. Bilt’s guided learning on the Vision Pro allows users to use their eyes, hands and voice to interact with each element of a product, enlarge or minimise parts, and see animated step-by-step assembly instructions on the photorealistic display.

Unlike conventional static manuals, the spatial computing app provides step-by-step 3D instructions that can viewed alongside real equipment. Users can access current information in their work environment, leading to faster task completion, fewer errors and a decreased reliance on technical support.

The recently-launched Apple Vision Pro spatial computer blends digital content with the physical world and allow users to interact with apps by simply looking at them. Physically, the Vision Pro consists of a headset containing a ultra-high-resolution display that provides users with a photorealistic digital twin that combines the real and the digital worlds. The 3D images can be controlled by inputs such as tapping a finger to select, flicking a wrist to scroll, or using a virtual keyboard or dictation to type text.

At the launch of the $3,499 Vision Pro in February, Apple CEO Tim Cook described it as “the most advanced consumer electronics device ever created. Its revolutionary and magical user interface will redefine how we connect, create, and explore.

“The era of spatial computing has arrived,” he declared.

Siemens’ first assembly and installation guides for the Vision Pro include its Class 14 Nema motor starters and P5 power distribution panels. Both of these are aimed at the North American market and other countries that use UL standards. At present, the Vision Pro is only available in the US.

Apple Vision Pro user view of Bilt 3D immersive instructions shows a digital rendering of Siemens power panel next to the real panel for side-by-side guided work. Text instructions can also be shown.

Siemens is planning to offer Bilt support for other products, including its smart InHab home energy management portfolio.

“This is a great example of how we are maximising digitalisation to enable the next generation of electricians,” says Andreas Matthé, CEO of Siemens Smart Infrastructure’s electrical products business. “The ability to pick a digital representation of electrical equipment and work with it in the physical space in front of you, transforms the educational experience, creating a safer, low cost and innovative way of learning.”

Bilt is joining Siemens’ Xcelerator Ecosystem and its apps will be available via the Marketplace.

“Siemens is an industry innovator,” says Bilt CEO and chairman, Nate Henderson. “They’re making it possible for apprentices and new electricians to upskill faster, install with confidence, and follow safety guidelines more easily. Bilt for Apple Vision Pro enables them to provide tactical and intuitive training that fits the needs of a new generation of learners.”
