HVAC-R drives help OEMs to move to F-Gas compliance

11 March, 2024

Invertek Drives has launched two compact-frame HVAC-R drives aimed at OEMs who are having to move to R290 (propane) and R744 (CO2) refrigerants, as well as A2L and A3 types which support the F-Gas regulations. The new frame size 3 and 4 drives add higher current capabilities to the company's Optidrive Coolvert (HVAC-R) family, which is designed for use with brushless DC compressors, heat pumps and CDUs (condensing units), allowing HVAC-R OEMs to optimise their system performance in a compact space.

Invertek says that the new drives are the smallest in their class, saving valuable space in applications such as refrigeration and heat pumps. They meet the demands of scroll compressor manufacturers for higher capacity outputs, with 400V, three-phase output currents reaching 30A and 39A in size 3 frames, and 46–58A in size 4.

“These new Coolvert sizes allow our customers to optimise system design and efficiency while complying with evolving global environmental and emission regulations, such as the latest F-Gas requirements in the European Union,” says Mike Carman, Invertek’s executive business development manager for HVAC-R. “The VFDs’ smaller footprint is particularly valuable for applications where space is a premium, and the extended power range opens doors for new applications.”

The Coolvert drives promise:
Easy set-up and matching Only five parameters are need to configure BLDC/PMAC compressor motors.
Compactness Achieved using slim DC link technology.
Flexible mounting There are through-panel mounting and cold-plate mounting options.
Compliance No external components are needed to comply with EN61800-3-2 / EN61800-3-12 harmonics standards.

Invertek’s new HVAC-R drives are said to be the smallest in their class

“Coolvert is the ideal choice for OEMs seeking high-performance, space-saving solutions for natural refrigerant BLDC compressors,” says Carman.

“Beyond the benefits for OEMs, the Coolvert VFDs are ideal for a wide range of sectors increasingly reliant on energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly HVAC-R technology,” he adds. “This includes data centres, supermarkets, industrial process cooling and building air-conditioning systems.”
